“Johnny [Depp] It was actually the guy who explained to me what being gay was when I was 9,” she told Andy Cohen in an interview Andy Cohen Live by SiriusXM Released on Thursday.

The “Yellow Jackets” star said the conversation stemmed from a homophobic incident on the set of the film, which she called “the first film.”

“There’s something going on in the scene where someone treats someone badly. They’re like, ‘Oh, he’s probably gay.’ And then I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t understand what that is,'” the Emmy-nominated actress continued said.

Richie recalled turning to her “Mermaid” co-star Winona Ryder for clarity. Ryder, who was dating Depp at the time, had trouble expressing her homosexuality to the curious young actress, so she asked her partner for help.

“She was like, ‘I don’t know how…’ So she put me on the phone with Johnny. Johnny explained that to me,” Rich told Cohen.

She said Depp explained homosexuality to her in “the simplest terms”. “He was like, ‘This is when a man wants to have sex with a man, and when a woman wants to have sex with a woman.’ I was like, ‘Ah, okay,'” Richie recalls .

Depp and Ryder dated for four years, from 1989 to 1993. The Mermaid was released in 1990.

Cohen noted the irony of Richie talking to Ryder and Depp when their other “Mermaid” co-star Cher was nearby. “I love it, that Winona Ryder had to make you call Johnny Deppein to get that story she couldn’t spit out somehow – or, I mean, you’re in the next trailer There’s Cher in there,” he said.

“I knew, we should have just run over there,” Ricci joked.
