A clip from a new Manchester City documentary shows Guardiola delivering a passionate team speech centred on Messi.
Together: Win the championship again! Provides behind-the-scenes access to the club’s 2021/22 Premier League title campaign.
Fascinating footage of Manchester City’s Champions League tie against Club Brugge shows Guardiola telling his team why Messi is the “best player” he’s ever seen in his life.
In a lively team talk, he said next to him: “You know why Messi is the best player I’ve ever seen in my life?
“Because he’s a competitor. He’s an animal.”
Guardiola added: “Now, we pass the ball to us to see…
“When you pass the ball… attack here!
“You have to score goals, guys!
“Messi passes the ball and enters like a machine. He smells goals!
“You have to get past it, you have to get there.”
Guardiola’s rousing speech had the desired effect as the Blues secured a 5-1 victory in Belgium – leading 2-0 at half-time.
Kyle Walker, Cole Palmer and Riyad Mahrez scored in the second half as City moved to the top of Group A ahead of Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain.
But, like Paris Saint-Germain, City were eventually eliminated by Real Madrid, who beat Liverpool in the final.
The prestigious Champions League title remains at the top of City’s trophy wish list ahead of the new season.
