Kremlin diplomat says ‘I hate Russians’ in video

Moscow said on Thursday that a Norwegian consul could no longer stay in Russia after he was filmed declaring “I hate Russians” during an outburst of anger at a hotel reception.

“It is impossible for Elizabeth Ellingson to be present in Russia following this incident,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the foreign ministry summoned Norway’s ambassador, Rune Resaland, to protest Ellingson’s “insulting Russophobic remarks”.

Norwegian diplomats were recorded insulting Russians at a hotel reception in the Arctic city of Murmansk.

The video, posted by the Mash Telegram channel over the weekend, allegedly has close ties to Russian security services and sparked outcry in the country.

“I hate Russians…give me a room…I’m used to cleaning, I’m from Scandinavia,” Ellingsen said in English.

Ellingson’s outburst comes amid tensions between Russia and the West Russia invades Ukrainewhich triggered a series of sanctions against Moscow from the United States and Europe.

Norway’s foreign ministry said over the weekend it “deeply regrets” the incident.

“The sentiments expressed do not reflect Norwegian policy or Norway’s attitude towards Russia,” the foreign ministry said.

On Thursday, Moscow said it had taken note of the statement from Norway’s foreign ministry.

Norway’s foreign ministry spokesman Guri Solberg said on Thursday that the country’s ambassador had been informed that Moscow had revoked Ellingson’s visa.

The ambassador reiterated that the consular statement “does not reflect Norwegian policy,” Solberg said, adding that Ellingson is not currently in Russia.

Norway said in June it would temporarily close its consulate general in Murmansk.
