Local police chief Wuttipong Somjai told Reuters by phone that a fire broke out at a nightclub on Mount B, about 180 kilometers southeast of the capital Bangkok, at around 1 a.m. local time. Local TV footage showed people fleeing the club and emergency workers dousing the flames, watching burnt homes with shoes and bottles strewn on the ground.

Prime Minister Prayuth Prayut assured the families of the victims that they would receive help from the authorities and urged entertainment venues across the country to ensure they have proper emergency exits and safety measures in place.
