Arsenal are starting their return to the Premier League for a second consecutive season, but they are hoping things will be a little better than when they started losing to Brentford last season. After joining Gabriel Jesus and Aleksandr Zinchenko, there is good reason to expect progress, and Mikel Arteta is doing everything he can to bring City’s environment to the Emirates.

For Patrick Vieeria, he can only hope that Crystal Palace can take the next step in their progress to topple Arsenal and start the season. They’ve made sensible additions in the transfer market and one of the good things about the start of the season is that all teams are on equal footing. Even without Michael Orlis and without Conor Gallagher back at Chelsea, Crystal Palace will be in a fierce battle to protect their home ground.

story plot

Crystal Palace: Thanks to tours in Australia and Singapore, Crystal Palace face the unique challenge of needing to split during pre-season, which doesn’t give Vieira the best chance to get all of their players to work together. Some players didn’t meet each country’s entry requirements, but they’re all together now, as he’s also looking to integrate new signing Chris Richards into the squad. Most of the lineup will be on the field, but Michael Olis, Sam Johnstone, Jack Butland and James MacArthur will be unavailable.

arsenal: There are few problems with Arteta’s health. Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu will miss the game, but under the new system, Ben White will play at right-back to move the attack forward. When Oleksandr Zinchenko preyed on the flanks, it gave Arsenal plenty of space to support Jesus while also balancing the defence.

As strong as pre-season has been for Arsenal, Patrick Vieeria knows how to get a draw in every situation. Pick: Crystal Palace 2, Arsenal 2
