Chelsea have signed Brighton’s Spanish defender Marc Cucurella to a six-year deal.

The 24-year-old left-back has scored in 38 games in his only season since joining the Seagulls from Spanish club Getafe.

“I’m really happy. It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world,” Cucurella said.

“I’m going to work hard, have fun here and help the team.”

Brighton say they have received a record fee for Cucurella, surpassing the £50m fee paid by Ben White to Arsenal last summer.

A graduate of the Barcelona Academy, Cucurella won a senior cap for Spain and played for the under-23 team that won silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Last month, Brighton rejected a £30m offer from champions Manchester City for Cucurella, who handed in a transfer request after Manchester City expressed interest.

“We don’t want to lose Mark, but he wants a chance to play in the Champions League to speed up his move into Spain’s World Cup squad,” Brighton manager Graham Potter said.

“Of course we are disappointed with Mark’s departure, but we wish him all the best for the future.

“He’s had a fantastic first season in the Premier League and deservedly won our two seasons of Player of the Year awards and it’s been a pleasure working with him over the past 12 months.”

Cucurella is the second big spender to leave Brighton this summer after the midfielder Yves Bisuma joins Tottenham £25m plus add-ons.
