Michigan man charged with setting fire to Planned Parenthood building

Joshua Brereton of Paw Paw, Michigan, has been charged with one count of arson for a federally funded organization. If convicted, Breton faces up to 20 years in prison, according to the Justice Department. The charge comes with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years.

Law enforcement responded to a fire at the Kalamazoo Family Planning Center in late July, according to court documents. After the blaze was put out, the local fire chief noticed that the fire had been ignited from two different sources – in the bushes outside the building, and from a “log of a fire starter that looked like it was thrown onto the roof”.

Through Planned Parenthood’s surveillance video, investigators determined that the fire started on the roof using Duraflame logs, court documents said.

They then searched store records and learned that Brereton had purchased Duraflame logs at a local Walmart less than two hours before the fire. Court documents say Breton’s appearance on the store’s surveillance footage matches Planned Parenthood’s appearance.

Investigators said they also found Brereton’s YouTube channel, where he posted videos bashing the government, taxes and abortion.

“Just like right now, we’re having a genocide,” Breton said in a video, according to court documents. “Genocide! Babies! People think it’s always been a hot topic. You do have neighbors who think it’s okay to kill babies.” He went on to encourage observers to “change society from the inside out,” telling them “no one else will. this way”.

Breton has yet to file a formal plea, according to court records. An attorney for Brereton has not been listed.
