Merrick Garland comments on DOJ Jan. 6 investigation
Attorneys representing former President Donald Trump are reportedly reaching out to the Justice Department in hopes of shielding conversations with his former adviser from criminal investigation to prevent him from trying to overturn the 2020 election result.
Earlier, investigators leading the federal probe filed a lawsuit against former White House adviser Peter Navarro for retracting emails related to the probe into Trump’s role. The emails in question were sent from Mr. Navarro’s personal email account, but have been determined to be in presidential records — and therefore the property of the US government.
The investigation also subpoenaed former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and his deputy Patrick Philbin. The attorney’s office is seen as crucial to refusing to allow former President Donald Trump to politicize the executive branch’s legal establishment to secure re-election.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump’s children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka, have both been ousted in another investigation, this time over New York’s attorney general’s real estate dealings with the Trump Organization and alleged overvaluation and undervaluation of properties to obtain Concessional loans are documented with long-term investigation terms while minimizing tax obligations. The former president is expected to testify in the coming days.
