The England men will face South Africa for a bronze medal in Commonwealth hockey after beating permanent champions Australia 3-2.

In the second quarter, the hosts led 2-0 and ranked No. 1 in the world.

But Australia – which has won gold every time hockey is included in the Olympics – quickly fought back, completing a comeback with 10 minutes remaining to the disappointment of the home crowd.

The bronze medal match starts at 09:00 BST on Monday.

Phil Roper scored first for the hosts and the ball went straight through the goalkeeper’s leg to make it 1-0.

Captain Zach Wallace then converted a penalty before Australia’s Blake Govers scored from a penalty corner to make it 2-1 at half-time.

Australia continued to press England in the third period, with Jacob Anderson eventually levelling.

Daniel Beal scored the goal to give Australia the lead and three-time Commonwealth bronze medallists England tried desperately to bring it into the shootout but couldn’t find a third.

England can still win gold in the women’s competition and face Australia in the final at 15:00 BST on Sunday.

Australia will face India in the men’s final at 12:30 BST on Monday, who beat South Africa 3-2.
