Five sex offenders, 20 gang members arrested at southern Texas border

Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley region have apprehended five previously deported sex offenders and more than 20 dangerous gang members over the course of a week. The arrests took place along the border, as far as 80 miles inland.

Border Patrol agents at Falfurrias Station apprehended Manuel Ramirez, a Honduran national who was illegally in the United States. During a background check, agents found a New York court conviction of attempted rape in the first degree in 2017, according to information provided by Rio Grande Valley Department officials. The court sentenced the Honduran national to four years in prison.Agents also reported that the man was a member of the violent extremist Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang

Two days later, Falfurrias agents arrested another MS-13 gang member. Agents identified the man as an El Salvadoran national. A Virginia court sentenced the man to five years in prison for having sex with a child.

On August 2, agents at the Rio Grande City Station at Border Patrol arrested a Salvadoran national and identified him as a member of the El Salvador 18th Street gang. Court records in El Salvador show he has previous convictions for attempted murder, firearm possession and theft, officials said.

The next day, agents at the same station arrested Cesar Campos, a Peruvian national who was illegally in the United States. A records check revealed a New York court conviction of rape of a child under 17. The court handed down sentences ranging from 16 months to four years.

Later in the day, agents in the city of Rio Grande also arrested a Honduran immigrant who was convicted by a New Jersey court of criminal sexual contact. The court sentenced the man to 12 months in prison.

Over the course of a week, agents in the southern Texas border area arrested 11 18th Street gang members, nine MS-13 members and a Paisa gang member.

Any immigrant who was previously deported for a criminal felony conviction will be prosecuted in federal court for illegal reentry after deportation. If charged and convicted, each could spend up to 20 years in federal prison.
