“We are closely monitoring the fight against the fires in the industrial area. We trust the authorities in Brave Province, the brave firefighters and CUPET workers,” President Miguel Diaz-Canel tweeted, referring to State-owned Cuban Petroleum Union.
Cuban state media said no deaths were reported.
“There have been no reports of casualties or fuel spills into the sea following the fire,” Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines tweeted.
According to Susely Morfa González, first secretary of the Cuban Communities Party in Matanzas province, the fire was caused by a discharge at the bottom of the oil tank where the crude oil was stored.
The ministry said the fire did not affect the thermoelectric power plant Antonio Guiteras, which contributes to the national electricity system.
Authorities in the province, the fire department, the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry are battling the blaze, Gonzalez said.
