Saturday is Fan Day at Ford Field, an open practice session inside the Detroit Lions home ground for fans to enjoy. As the leader of the Lions, head coach Dan Campbell did what he does best: ignite fans with hope, In a way only Campbell can.
After greeting fans with some truthful words about the blue-collar nature of Detroit City, Campbell – wearing a custom baseball cap with “Courage” written on it – became sentimental.
“You’re going to give your coat over the winter to someone who needs it,” said the former Lions tight end. “That’s what this community is all about.”
Then there’s the exciting sound that the stadium’s 18,000 fans want to hear.
“And yet…however — no one’s going to take advantage of our hospitality. No one. That’s what we’re going for. That’s what we’re going for. This team is doing everything they can to give you something to be proud of.”
Campbell followed with the pride of a lion.
“We’re starving. We’re starving! So the hyenas better get out of the way.”
