Check out what’s going on in European football on Sunday:
Striker Erling Haaland will make his Premier League debut for Manchester City at West Ham. City will start its league title defense without defender Aymeric Laporte. Laporte underwent knee surgery and could miss a month. West Ham’s new signing isn’t ready to debut. Forward Gianluca Scamacca is not healthy enough and defender Nayef Aguerd has a knee injury. Manchester United boss Eric Ten Haag has been vague about whether Cristiano Ronaldo will be present when they host Brighton. Ronaldo has been openly saying he wants to leave, but Ten Haig also insisted on keeping him. “Cristiano works very hard,” says the Ten Witches. Brentford’s home side Leicester are the only league clubs not to sign new players this summer, nor will they replace last week’s game against Sevilla Two key injuries in the friendly match. Portugal defender Ricardo Pereira ruptured his Achilles tendon and is out for six months and winger Harvey Barnes will miss several weeks with a knee problem. Outgoing captain Kasper Schmeichel will also not be replaced. Danny Ward and Daniel Iverson will battle for the goalie starting spot. Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans is the new captain.
Newly-promoted Schalke will visit Cologne for their first game after the Bundesliga. Schalke has a new coach in Frank Kramer after club great Michael Biskens took Schalke back to the top flight with seven wins in his eight games in charge. It remains to be seen whether Kramer can achieve a similar success rate after the cash-strapped club went through a sign-and-leave offseason. Cash is no problem for Leipzig, who visit Stuttgart early in the game. Leipzig, who finished fourth last season, signed German defender David Raum from Hoffenheim last week for 26 million euros ($26.5 million).
Marseille, Rennes and Nice are the top three contenders. Marseille host Reims, Rennes host Lorient and a visit from Nice boosts Toulouse. Igor Tudor has a big vacancy after replacing Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli, who reportedly left Marseille this summer due to a relationship with the club. Recruitment strategies are divided. Marseille relies heavily on Dimitri Payet to create and score goals, so the arrival of Colombian striker Luis Suarez from Granada could ease Payet’s burden. To qualify for the Champions League, Rennes have loaned Wales international Joe Roden from Tottenham Hotspur and Belgian defender Arthur Sitter from Bologna for a reported €20m fee to make up for Morocco centre-back Naruto. Yev Agald to leave West Ham for a fee. Nice replaced head coach Christophe Galtier with a familiar face, Lucien Favre, who led the club to a third-place finish in 2017. Nice’s signings policy is ambitious, signing Wales international Aaron Ramsey from Juventus and Romania winger Lares Ily from Rapid Bucharest front to help Andy Delot and Armin Guri. At the back, Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has replaced Walter Benitez, who joined PSV Eindhoven, while Empoli centre-back Mattia Vitti is expected to replace the aged Dante.
