Chelsea defeat Timo Werner to rejoin RB Leipzig on permanent deal

Chelsea signed the Germany international from Leipzig for £47.5m in 2020.

But the 26-year-old has struggled since joining English football, scoring a disappointing 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues.

Chelsea have now decided to sell the striker back to Leipzig, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“Leipzig ready to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea, let’s do it! Told it will be a permanent contract, not a loan. Werner will be leaving Chelsea,” Romano wrote on Twitter.

“First call to @Plettigoal today, final details are being discussed now – done, personal terms agreed since 1 month.”

Chelsea have allowed Romelu Lukaku to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with the Belgium international rejoining Inter Milan on a season-long loan.

If Werner also leaves, Thomas Tuchel’s squad will be left with just two senior strikers, Kai Havertz and Armando Broja.

“There’s not a lot of demand for the number 9. Players sometimes want to change the number, but surprisingly no one wants to touch it.

“Like, everybody older than me at the club told me, ‘You know he has nines and he doesn’t score, he has nines and he doesn’t score either.’ Now we have time and no one wants to touch Number nine.”
